It’s actually a mountain cave-shed and/or secondary living space (which could easily be finished into a full-blown guesthouse)... or enjoyed just the way it is!!!

Geodesic Dome

The estate has an award winning geodesic growing dome (an enclosed greenhouse) ...from Growing Spaces for year round gardening. It comes complete with pond, gas-heater, irrigation system (w/timer), foil insulation (for some of the panels), nets and a solar automated venting system that provides ideal greenhouse ventilation, cooling, and stable temperatures. A variety of plants... including vegetables, fruits, flowers, herbs, and exotic plants that require specific temperature and humidity levels can be grown. It can also serve as a sanctuary or a tranquil retreat filled with scented and/or aesthetic flowers. This is a beautiful bonus for green thumb enthusiasts and requires low maintenance (it’s recommended to clean the panels once or twice a year with soap and warm water, re-tape panel edges when necessary, weed, pest control and add dirt as needed). These and other services can all be scheduled through Growing Spaces (they have a very knowledgeable and helpful team willing to provide these services... and they are literally within walking distance of the property). Also... the Pagosa Springs, Geothermal Greenhouse Partnership (a 501c3 nonprofit)... offers a variety of resources and greenhouse education to anyone interested (they also provide water plants for greenhouse ponds to locals FREE of charge).

A property assessor, a real estate broker and a few other industry related professionals that visited recently, all looked out the windows and voiced some of the following statements... “That’s a stunning, panoramic vista. That view could even be more ...if some of the trees were cut and/or topped ...incredible!!! A view like that increases the perceived value of the property. It’s scenery that commands a premium price tag.” Everyone who has experienced these views first hand ...has expressed the same type of sentiments. And there are other views from other areas of the property just as incredible. One friend looked out the windows and asked... “Was that there the last time I visited?” Everyone smiled and laughed. Then he was answered... “Yes. It’s always been there.”

The Hangar (aka: the Big Barn) was originally an Airplane Hangar. Yes, back when there weren’t too many rules in Pagosa, a former owner used to open the expansive hangar doors (3), pull out his plane, and drive it down to the old airport. It’s not suggested these days (it’s actually illegal to drive a plane down the street to the airport in Pagosa Springs, Colorado, or anywhere else; driving a plane on public roads is not permitted under any circumstances due to safety concerns and FAA regulations) ...but this 850 square foot space, which sits on a concrete slab and is fully equipped with electricity (it’s own breaker box), plumbing, and water... has been used as a shop, garage, storage and cave/shed over the years. It’s yearning to be converted into an aviation lover’s dream (a shop, library, guest house, garage, entertainment room, cave, shed, etc.). Stevens Field Airport (Pagosa Springs Airfield) is only 3 minutes away (1.4 miles).

Expansive Deck

From the downstairs area French doors open to the expansive back deck, which is a wonderful feature of this property. The deck expands across the entire back of the main house and it provides a sanctuary of sorts. The San Juan Mountains are big as life and the scenery is majestic. The deck provides a comfortable place to sit and relax, read a book, enjoy the view, think, talk, eat a meal, listen to music, watch the birds dance in the air ...and/or among many other things to just have a cup of coffee and enjoy the morning, afternoon and evening. Yes, the evening. The stars on a clear night in Colorado are some kind of wonderful!!! There’s not much like a Colorado sky (it’s a highly recommended experience to take in often). There are also two distinct balconies on the upper levels... one is connected via a stairway and the other is private. Both balconies along with the rest of entire deck provide unbeatable outdoor space to take in the sights and enjoy the Colorado seasons.

Drive & Parking

There’s something about a dirt road driveway that winds through beautiful landscape with so many natural features like forests, colorful fields and wildlife. The feeling is rustic and the drive is leisurely... the surrounding nature is meant to be enjoyed. From the entrance of Heaven’s Gate ...it’s a fun and interesting experience. There’s no challenge to it... just an added touch of exploration and an added “off-the-beaten-path” feeling to the drive. From the initial half circle, the drive leads to a private road ...and the privacy is felt instantly. It’s a short drive in, but it’s a beautiful one. If the means of transportation is not being housed in either the attached two-car-garage or the hangar (which has space for up to 4 vehicles), there are many outdoor parking areas to choose from. There’s also a very useful drive from the street, which goes behind the hangar, where a larger vehicle can be accommodated (ex: Truck, RV, Camper, Trailer, etc.). This space connects back with the private drive for easy access.
